Back to Basics

When I first started speed sketching I did quick gestures/poses. I went back to that today using this online reference tool: http://reference.sketchdaily.net/

These are 2 min. each.

On a tangent, I always see artists post these neatly organized, perfect pages of figural gestures where every figure is exactly the same size and they fit together like puzzle pieces. Am I the only one to wonder how that happens??

Cool Hair

~1 hr sketch of a woman with cool short hair, photo reference. Started with the hair so I didn't get very good feature placement or likeness, but it was fun!

Something slightly different, with reference from a sartorialist photo. ~45 min?

Sartorialist 2 + imaginary gestures

A quick sketch based on a sartorialist photo (10 min?), and some pose gestures from imagination (~5 min each) - practicing building the human form from the basics.

Sartorialist 1

I'm doing some studies from photos by http://www.thesartorialist.com/ . I like that his photos are of normal people in natural poses, and frequently are full-length shots.

I really like this sitting pose...quiet, relaxed, but confident.

I like the way her hair is falling and those huge cuffs on her sleeves.

Steampunk Eggs

Yep, steampunk eggs are a thing. These speed sketches were studies for the work I'm currently doing on Havencall!

More Character Practice

More quick sketches for character practice! These (and the ones from yesterday) took about 15-25 min each. Again, trying to work up from basic lines and shapes. Also trying to make cleaner lines...but I  need a lot more practice on that front.

Figures

Today I was focusing on quick figures to get some practice for character work. I started the second and third figures with a simple line of motion (one curve), and then tried to place the head, ribcage and pelvis in the correct position before fleshing out the figure. It's hard! I have a tendency to want to jump right into the shapes before establishing the correct framework. Must fight that urge!

Horse Study

Trying to focus on making the forms and values read correctly...took a bit to long on it though. ~1.5 hrs, with photo reference.

Pastel Sketches

It's the first time in a while I did some traditional art! Made necessary by the fact that my kitty was on my lap, did not want to get up, and my tablet is currently configured for a standing position.

These are with pastels, ~20 minutes on the landscape and ~40 on the portrait. No reference. Also very messy because I didn't have an eraser!

Sunset Study

20 minutes, photo reference. Just tried to get the general mood as speedily as possible.

Lake Study

~1 hr. From Photo. Still using only two brushes...setting up a better selection of brushes is on my todo list!

Mountain Study

A 30-minute environment study (from photo):

I think I should probably try experimenting with more different types of brushes. I tend to get stuck using one or two types...but I bet those clouds would have looked a lot better if I'd just chosen a more "cloudy" brush.

Test Sketch

Drew this yesterday while testing different heights for my standing desk...

From photo reference, about 45 minutes

Couldn't get the jaw-line quite right as I placed the mouth a little high. I still need to work on placing the basic forms before getting into details...
