Motion 2
This sketch is based off of a photo I took today of my cat Dinah. She was stalking a bird, and I thought it would be a good study for my "motion" focus. I meant it to be a 15-minute sketch, but it ended up taking 45 minutes...oh well!

Motion 1
One of my weaknesses is the portrayal of motion - I will often find myself doing very static work, and ending up with a stiff, boring result. So I'm going to try and turn that around by getting more comfortable with bold motion - in pose and in technique.

Back to it!
It's been a while, and things have been crazy...but I'm getting back into daily speed sketches. Here are a few from today:
top to bottom:

8 minutes
I really like how buffalo look - they always seem to poised and stoic.

Well In
Here are a couple small sketches from the game project I'm currently working on (to be announced shortly!).
`But they were in the well,' Alice said to the Dormouse...
`Of course they were', said the Dormouse; `--well in.'

"Not Quite Daily"
Oops! I forgot to post yesterday (although I did do a little sketch, below). The reason being: life is super, super busy right now! Thankfully in a good way (lots of work)! But this level of busy-ness probably means that this "daily" sketch blog may not be exactly "daily" for a little while! So look out for "not-quite-daily" speed sketch posts, and also posts every now and then in my main blog (nataliemaletz.com) about these other projects that are keeping me so busy!

More speed!
Today I cut down on my time - these were 2 minutes each (except the guy on the bottom, which was ~15 minutes). As you can see I wasn't really able to finish anything in 2 minutes in color, but it was good practice!

Discus thrower and cat shoulder blades
Time per sketch: 30 seconds
Not much time to sketch today! But it was Havencall work keeping me from sketching, so that's ok. :)
I also decided to give my posts more interesting titles than simply the date. It can be a game - find the weird things I mention in the title in the mess of chicken scratches below! ^_^ I guess it's not a very difficult game...haha

Time/sketch: 30 seconds (except for the handstand guy)
The two sketches with red bits is me doing a little exercise where I draw a scribble without anything in mind (the red bit), and then try to construct something that makes sense around it (in this case, figures).

Today I sketched one of my kitties (Dinah). At first she was moving a lot so it was difficult, but then she settled down to nap and I got a good few sleeping poses. =^_^=

Time per sketch: 30 seconds (excluding the random stuff at the bottom)
Once again, horses, big cats and athletes. Great subjects for speed sketching!
So yeah, I guess I got tired of drawing from reference at the bottom and some random stuff cropped up. :P
Oh also, 2nd from the top on the right was an adorable tiger cub scratching its head with one of its feet while standing. It was too cute. That is all.

Jan. 22, 2013
Time per sketch: 2 minutes
Total time spent sketching: 22 minutes
Subject: faces
Notes: I decided to give myself a little more time than usual today to see what I could do with it. I think the 30 second sketches have probably been improving my ability to quickly analyze the subject and place pieces/features in accurate positions. Doing these longer sketches gave me a chance to see if this quick analyzing skill carries over into longer sketches as well. I think it likely does, but I definitely need a lot more practice at the quick sketches, as well as more longer ones like these...

Jan. 20, 2013
Time per sketch: 30 seconds
Total time spent sketching: 14 minutes
Subjects: faces, athletes, people, horses, big cats
Notes: Didn't focus on anatomy like I thought I might, it seemed difficult to do in 3o seconds...it's probably something better studied with 2-3 minute sketches. Today I was thinking more about types of mark-making, and using less lines where possible.

Jan. 19th, 2013
Time per sketch: 30 seconds
Total time spent sketching: ~13 minutes
Subjects: faces, athletes, people
Notes: trying to think a little more about "line of action" today in the bodies, and getting the big pieces down first with the faces...kinda ignored anatomy on some of these though..maybe that should be my focus tomorrow.
